Heart failure is a common and serious condition affecting around 920,000 people in the UK, with 200,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Many people experience symptoms early on, but most cases are only diagnosed after an emergency hospital visit, which can lead to worse outcomes and puts extra pressure on the NHS.

Across the NHS, heart failure leads to about 100,000 hospital admissions and one million bed days every year.

Although there is no cure, spotting heart failure early and managing it well can help people feel better and live longer. With the right care, symptoms can be controlled and quality of life improved.

National programme

Health Innovation North West Coast (HINWC) supports the national heart failure programme to promote early diagnosis and optimised long-term management, reduce hospital admissions, and improve the quality of life for patients living with heart failure.

Current Programmes

Heart Failure (HF) Pathway Mapping

Our heart failure national programme works collaboratively with partners to map current pathways. Where a local HF pathway is absent, HINWC will provide support around identifying and developing one.

Aim: To improve the early detection, optimisation and long-term management of heart failure patients.
