Case study for commissioners: Introducing Neuro Rehabilitation Online (NROL): From pilot to practice: Delivering and scaling digital stroke rehabilitation in the NHS
This case study explores how Neuro Rehabilitation Online (NROL), a digitally enabled, group-based rehabilitation model, progressed from local delivery to regional scale across the NHS. Designed to address workforce pressures, limited rehabilitation capacity and geographical inequalities, NROL delivers clinician-led rehabilitation sessions online, complementing face-to-face care and increasing access to therapy for people recovering from stroke and other neurological conditions.
Aimed at commissioners, the publication highlights the partnership approach, evidence of clinical and system benefits, and key lessons for commissioning and scale-up. It demonstrates how NROL has delivered improved access, greater efficiency, reduced travel and strong value for money, leading to substantive funding across Lancashire and South Cumbria and providing a blueprint for wider adoption across rehabilitation pathways.
