COVID has put the crisis of care centre stage, and offers an unprecedented opportunity to re appraise this fundamental part of human life which all of us are dependent upon and which, the vast majority will be called upon to provide at points during their lives.

Working with leading thinkers in the field we will explore together what do we mean by care? How do we define it, and why is it that it is at the heart of some of the most persistent and troubling policy challenges. Why has care been systematically misunderstood and marginalised? Drawing on the results of research with doctors, nurses and care workers we will explore why so often they feel their organisations obstructed their capacity to offer care leading to frustration and consider the great challenges of the future such as the ageing society, the possibilities of automation and the funding of care.

The masterclass also considered the importance of narrative and storytelling in reforming and building support for a better future for people with cause to draw on social care and will explore how we can work together to change the public story of social care with a particular focus on the North West and building the NW care narrative for 2022 and beyond. This masterclass is for everyone touched by the care agenda either directly in their work or in their day to day existence.

Speakers included:

  • Neil Crowther, Co-convener - #SocialCareFuture & Independent Consultant
  • Madeleine Bunting, Visiting Professor - International Inequalities Institute, LSE
